This is a project I have been doing since the end of Semester One. It started with a ‘Queen of Hearts’ inspired character that I made some work with in response to a one day task I set for myself. The project has now developed into an exploration of the the British Royal Family. I am interested in what their role has become in our world. I feel as though they have become a brand, something to sell or something to sell ideas through. They have become a symbol of ‘Britishness’ rather than having any tangible function.
The work here is me beginning to look at some of the rules and traditions that the royal family follow and combining that with the saturated market of the royal brand. The souvenirs with their faces on and the brand of them that is removed from the people themselves now. This work is exploring the fact that they are entirely a collective idea of how we perceive them rather than there being a genuine connection between “us” and the royal family.
